FAQs
Do I need prior martial arts experience or to be in great physical shape to start?
1
Not at all. Kokikai Aikido is designed for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Because our art relies on timing, balance, and redirecting energy rather than relying on muscle, you do not need brute strength to be effective. You will naturally build flexibility, coordination, and stamina simply by attending class and practicing at your own pace. If you have specific limitations, please let the instructors know and they will be able to adjust the class to accommodate. The goal is for everyone to leave class feeling better than when they entered.
What should I wear to my first class?
2
For your first few classes, comfortable workout clothing is perfect—sweatpants and a t-shirt or long-sleeved sweatshirt work well. Please ensure your clothes do not have zippers or hard hardware, and remove all jewelry and watches before stepping on the mat for safety. Once you decide to continue your training, instructors can help you order a traditional white gi (uniform).
How is KoKiKai Aikido different from other martial arts?
3
Aikido is unique because it stresses “disengagement” and “defusing” instead of confrontation and conflict. Our classes teach techniques that are used to extract from hostile situations in the most efficient way possible. You will not be “fighting” as much as you will be learning how to disengage from unwanted physical contact.
Are there competitions, sparring, or tournaments?
4
No. Aikido is entirely cooperative, not competitive. There are no tournaments, weight classes, or sparring matches. During class, students partner up and take turns practicing the techniques. We train together to help each other improve, creating a supportive community environment where the goal is mutual growth, not defeating the person across from you. The only person you are competing against if yourself. You should always ask yourself, “Am I better today than I was yesterday?”. It is our goal to help you answer, “YES!” to that question consistently.
