Aikido and Self-Defense
At South Orange Kokikai Aikido, we view self-defense not as a contest of brute strength, but as a study of balance, timing, and movement.
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art founded on the principle that you do not need to resort to violence—nor be the victim of it—in response to an unprovoked attack. Unlike many traditional martial arts, our practice does not rely on blocking force with force or exchanging strikes. Instead, we recognize that an attacker’s greatest weakness is the tension and physical imbalance created by the very act of attacking.
By emphasizing deep relaxation, correct posture, and mind-body coordination, Kokikai Aikido teaches you how to safely redirect aggressive energy to neutralize a threat. We focus on achieving minimum effort for maximum effect. Through cooperative practice on the mat, students learn to remain calm under pressure, proving that true self-defense comes from maintaining a peaceful center rather than matching an attacker's aggression.
KoKiKai’s founder, Shuji Maruyama (Silent Pioneer), uses the phrase “reduce power” when referring to accepting an incoming attack from a hostile individual. Using the techniques that you learn in this class, the goal is to make sure you can stay safe while reducing the amount of stress, both physical and mental, that you take on during a self-defense situation.
South Orange Aikido is a certified dojo of the Aikido KoKiKai Federation USA, and we have many affiliate dojos and programs across the country.
